The Dark Before the Dawn: It All Changed Overnight

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

It all changed overnight.

Most of the people on this earth aren’t happy. They’re depressed, sad, chasing empty dreams, and always coming up short. Even we Christians who hold the hope of the gospel can be like this. All of us know the deep darkness of depression. That cloud blinding your mind, your vision, your heart, that’s pressing down on you. I know what it’s like to lay in bed afraid. I know what it’s like to go for weeks controlled by anxiety and depression. I know what it’s like to be shaking from horrified shock, too surprised to even cry.

And I know what it’s like to wake up to the light.

Two-thousand years ago there were three days of complete darkness.

Three days of suffocating evil, depression, tears, sobbing, pain, hopelessness, and death.

But it all changed.

And it all changed overnight.

One night eleven men in hiding went to sleep, worn out by grief and fear. And in the morning, they woke up to find that a bright light had broken all the darkness forever. That all their fears and grieving was unnecessary. That true life had come for the first time, never to leave.

Your prayers, and tears, and pain, and aching, is all going to end.

Christ rose again; and you will rise out of whatever you’re going through if you only rely on Him.

It can all change overnight. Even if you feel like it’s over, and that the end is not in sight, remember how in one day the world changed forever.

In Andrew Peterson’s words, this is the dark before the dawn.

I encourage you to listen to this song, The Dark Before the Dawn. Listen to the lyrics, and really think them through.

And this Easter, along with the anniversary of Christ rising out of darkness for you, I encourage you with Him to rise out of whatever darkness you’re facing.
